Sodium
Chloride
Better known as salt, sodium chloride is essential for
life. The benefits of salt come from both the sodium and
chlorides. The sodium portion is the dominant cation in
regulating blood and tissue pH. Sodium is found in most
body fluids and in the bones. Muscle contraction is dependent
on proper sodium concentrations. Sodium is also involved
with nerve impulse transmission and the rhythmic action
of the heart. The chlorides also help balance the bloods
pH. They are also required for the stomachs production
of hydrochloric acid required for food digestion. Salt
needs and applications vary from animal to animal and
also from environmental conditions, feed variability and
animal health. North American Salt offers many versions
of white salt for animal maintenance to help address these
variables.

Our
non-mineralized salt line up includes:
White
Block
Available in both solution mined evaporated salt and solar
salts. Our 50 pound blocks are extremely tough, weather
resistant and designed for free choice feeding.
Fine
Stock
Fine Stock is our most common white feed salt. It contains
the anti-caking agent YPS and is available in evaporated,
solar or rock salts.
Easy
Flow
This evaporated salt contains YPS and is available in
50-pound bags.
Mixing
Salt
This rock salt, unlike all other American Stockman
products, comes in a poly bag. It is available in the
Great Lakes region in both 50 and 80 pound bags.
Medium
and Multi-Purpose Salt
Both 50-pound rock salt products are available out of
our Kansas production facility. The Multi-Purpose is a
much finer cut than the Medium.
Solar
Feed Salts
Available in Medium, Mixing (50 and 80#) or Milled
(50 and 80#). Of the three cuts, Milled is the finest
and Medium is the largest cut.
Big
6 Trace Mineral
Your first choice for weight gain,
feeding efficiencies and overall herd performance. Big
6 is by far our most popular mineralized ag salt. Big
6 contains the six core micro minerals - zinc, manganese,
cobalt, copper, iodine, and iron - required for basic
animal health. Big 6 is formulated for all classes of
beef and dairy cattle, pigs and horses. Here is a summary
of each minerals characteristics, benefits and the associated
risk with deficiencies:
Manganese
is required for the enzyme needed to synthesize the mucopolysaccharide
in cartilage and bone. It also plays a key role in activating
enzymes required for carbohydrate and lipid metabolism.
Fertility can be directly affected because of manganese
involvement with hormone synthesis. Problems associated
with manganese deficiency include weakness, slow growth,
stiff joints, and high birth mortality.
Iron
is essential in the production of hemoglobin, which carries
oxygen from the lungs to all of the body tissues and carries
carbon dioxide back to the lungs. Hemoglobin and iron
are continuously needed, as the red blood cells are constantly
being destroyed and replaced. Iron deficiency will result
in anemia.
Copper is the mineral most likely to be deficient
in grazing cattle. The exact mechanism by which copper
deficiency causes infertility is not clear, but theory
is it's related to the enzyme systems requiring copper.
Infertility due to copper deficiency is becoming a more
widespread problem in beef cattle do to the change in
the genetic makeup of the cattle herds. Along with iron,
copper is also necessary in hemoglobin formation. Other
problems associated with low copper levels are stunted
growth and lower disease resistance. A
key sign of possible copper deficiency is depigmentation
of the hair around the eyes and ears, especially the peripheral
hairs of the ears. Often the hair will appear dry, kinky,
lack luster, and be slow to shed in the spring. Although
these symptoms can occur with other diseases, copper deficiency
should be considered with they appear. Other symptoms
are depraved appetite or decreased milk production.
Iodine
deficiency affects reproduction primarily as a result
of hypothyroidism. Iodine is required for thyroxin production,
the major hormone controlling the basal metabolic rate.
In females, silent heat, early embryonic mortality, abortion,
weak calves retained placenta, and decreased conception
rates have been observed with iodine deficiency. Deficient
soils or the presence of feed containing goitrogens are
the most common factors causing iodine deficiency. Plants
such as cabbage, canola, kale, soybean meal or feeds high
in nitrates are goitrogenic. Symptoms can include sluggishness,
goiters, and sensitivity to heat or cold.
Cobalt
is required by the rumen micorflora to synthesize vitamin
B12. Vitamin B12 is essential for appetite stimulation
and normal protein, carbo-hydrate and mineral metabolism.
The most common symptoms are decreased appetite, listlessness,
lack of thrift and anemia. Associated problems are low
conception rates, abortions and weak calves. Cobalt supplementation
will normally correct these symptoms rapidly. Vitamin
B12 levels in the blood are the most common method of
diagnosing a cobalt deficiency.
Zinc
is required throughout the body to activate enzymes and
to form metalloenzymnes. These enzymes, which are required
for metabolism and protein synthesis, are more critical
to achieving maximum fertility. Zinc deficiency is most
obvious in males but can also affect females.
Growth retardation and delayed onset
of puberty are common in zinc deficient bull calves. This
is due, in part, to decreased appetite and impaired protein
synthesis. Diagnosis of zinc deficiency can be difficult
and are normally based on clinical signs and diet analysis.

Hi-Salt
with EDDI
The Cadillac of mineralized
salts. With twice the amount of zinc and three times the
amount of manganese or iron compared to any other mineralized
salt available on the market, Hi-Salt is unmatched in
performance. Hi-Salt also quadruples the organic iodine
(EDDI) levels found in standard trace mineral salts. EDDI
is the only organic form of mineralized iodine found in
feed salts. So if your serious about improved feed utilization,
animal growth, optimal reproduction, and all the benefits
of Big 6 Trace Mineral, then Hi-Salt is the answer. Available
in blocks or bag, Hi-Salt is formulated for all classes
of beef and dairy cattle.

Trace
Mineralized Salt with added Selenium
Selenium
functions through the enzyme glutathione peroxidase, which
reduces hydrogen and other organic peroxides. Without
this reduction the peroxides can damage body tissues.
Selenium has similar characteristics to vitamin E as an
antioxidant. The destruction of these peroxides can be
key in an animals immune systems and their ability to
handle stress. Another benefit on selenium is its role
in sulfur amino acid synthesis. These amino acids help
protect animals against several diseases. Symptoms in
cattle of selenium deficiency include white muscle disease,
heart failure and paralysis. Paralysis can range is severity
from slight lameness to inability to stand. Selenium deficient
soils are most prevalent in the Pacific Northwest and
in the western and central Great Lakes region. However,
feeds produced in selenium deficient areas are shipped
throughout the county thus spreading the problem. American
Stockman's selenium enhanced trace mineral salts is available
with 30 ppm or 90 ppm of added selenium. The 30 ppm does
not contain copper which makes it more suitable for sheep.
Both are available in blocks and bags.

Iodized
Salt
Iodized salt is the most common of all
mineralized salts. Its benefits to humans, especially
in under-developed countries, are well docu-mented. In
the United States, crops grown inland, such as the Midwest
and Great Lakes regions, are normally lower in iodine
levels. In addition, heat and moisture can break down
some iodine compounds thus a constant source of iodine
is beneficial. Please see the Big 6 Trace Mineral section
for additional iodine information.

Sulfur
Salt Block
Sulfur is required for
the development of protein, cartilage, bones and tendons.
It enhances enzyme activity that is important in hair
and wool production. Sulfur is also believed to work as
an insect repellant. Sulfur deficiency is noted by reduced
cellulose and fiber digestion, and poor weight gain. Most
diets contain adequate sulfur, however, dairy cattle and
sheep can benefit from higher levels.

Cobalt
Iodized
Cobalt
is not normally stored in the body at significant levels.
In addition, the cobalt present is not easily absorbed
where it can be used for vitamin B synthesis. For this
reason, frequent consumption of cobalt is necessary for
adequate vitamin B synthesis, which is an appetite stimulant.
Please see the Big 6 Trace Mineral section for additional
cobalt information.
